The reporter learned from the monitoring station of the Environmental Protection Bureau of Lechang City last night that after detection, the PH value and suspended solids of the river had exceeded the standard during the peak of pollution, but the heavy metal content in the water did not exceed the standard. The test report of the health department of Lechang City was formally released last night. After the technicians tested the water quality in 7 different locations along the Liaosi River in Xiushui Town, it was found that there were 2 sampling sites with normal water quality, Shangyu Village and Xiahe Village. Water quality of E. coli and other colonies was found to be exceeded at five locations such as Ba Zi Ling, but this did not result from mine contamination. Once the river water changed color

As early as the afternoon of the 14th, villagers in Xiushui town discovered that the original clear water of the Liaosi River had suddenly changed in a strange way: “At first, a yellow liquid in the stocks fell down in the clear water and slowly The rivers have become muddy yellow.” The villagers looked around and found that the water had a smell of sulfur and rust.

The staff of the Xiushui Township government also discovered the same thing on the early morning of the 15th. At 5 o'clock on the same day, staff members performed routine pumping operations at the water intake point of the Bazheiling Water Supply Station in Xiushui Town and found that water quality had deteriorated significantly. The water point is only tens of meters away from the coal mine belonging to Wang Moushan, a coal miner in Yizhang County, Hunan Province. The staff immediately called the mine’s drainage management staff and asked them to close the water outlet immediately to stop the drainage. However, until the 18th, the mine still did not completely close the water outlet, causing pollution to continue.

Xiushui Town immediately negotiated with Yizhang County and relevant coal mines. It turned out that at 3 pm on the 14th, Wang Min's coal mine directly discharged a large amount of unpurified wastewater into the mouth of the Liaosi River without notification. This caused the downstream river water to be contaminated and directly affected. It arrived at the Bazheiling water supply station.

The masses leaned around to take water

According to statistics, this incident caused a total of 893 households in Xiushui Town to have difficulty in drinking water. The affected areas were mainly in Mazhuntang Village in Xiushui Town and Shangxi Village and Xiahe Village in Xihe Village. Over the past few days, villagers with wells in some villages have had to live by picking wells. Villagers without wells have to take a long distance to pick up water from unpolluted areas upstream.

After the incident, Lechang City quickly established a processing team. The local authorities quickly cleared the raw water from the reservoir of the water supply station and re-introduced clean water from the unpolluted part of the upper reaches of the Liaosi River to carry out the cleaning work. Until the day before yesterday, the cleaning work was basically completed. At present, the affected water storage systems such as reservoirs and network management in Xiushui Town have basically returned to normal, and the water quality is relatively clear to the naked eye and smells no smell.

To the day when the relevant inspection report was announced in Lechang City, due to the general doubts of rivers and lakes whether residents of rivers were returning to normal water quality, a considerable number of people remained in a wait-and-see state, still relying on well water and upstream water-consumption. The drinking water of the people in the affected areas is expected to gradually return to normal today.

Construction of sewage pipes to prevent similar incidents

According to reports, Wang Moushan, the Hunan miner who caused the pollution incident, has also arrived in Lechang, and is working with the relevant departments in Lechang to do a good job of sewage treatment and compensation. He initially stated that he will not shirk the responsibility of the incident. In order to ensure that similar accidents do not occur in the future, Xiushui Town is negotiating with the construction of sedimentation tanks or sewage channels in the downstream to achieve completion at the end of this year.
